Base64 Encoder and Decoder

Switch between encoding and decoding. Accents and other scripts work, and you can choose the URL-safe form used in links and tokens.

Any text works, including accents and other scripts.

Questions

What is Base64 used for?

It turns data into plain letters, numbers and a few symbols so it can travel through systems that only handle text, such as email, JSON and URLs. It is an encoding, not encryption.

Is Base64 secure?

No. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords or secrets. Use real encryption for that.

What is URL-safe Base64?

A variant that swaps + and / for - and _ and leaves off the = padding, so the result can sit safely inside a link or a filename. JWTs use this form.

Does it handle non-English text and emoji?

Yes. Text is converted with UTF-8 first, so characters such as é, कोलकाता and ✓ round-trip correctly.

Why does decoding sometimes fail?

The input may contain characters that are not Base64, be missing part of its data, or decode to a file or image instead of text. The tool says which.
